Are Harley Techs a Dying Breed?

MMI and AMI schools have been the leader for aspiring mechanics to attend and get that "paper" that allows them to enter the Dealership as a technician.  But, recent posts and discussions on the web are debating whether the cost to attend these schools  worth the effort?

Some of the threads on these forums showcase the frustration of techs not receiving compensation for what they feel is a fair wage and ,conversely, employers not finding seasoned techs that are willing to work for them.  I had a great conversation with a HDU instructor and he sees the same malaise with shops and mechanics alike.  The recession let many shops and Dealers downsize, but did they go too far? Has the industry pushed all the good ones to other careers?
